Friday Showdown: Are Next Gen Consoles Being Rushed? | VG ...

There has been a recent surge lately of news for the next gen console wave, but what about the current gen? Have they really had time to shine, or is it about time for an upgrade? Well we here at VGL take the time to discuss such a thing as we ask ourselves:

Do you think the next generation of gaming consoles are being rushed when it?still doesn?t seem like they?ve maximized the power of the current gen?

Kazesama777:?In all honesty I do feel as if we?re hearing news about next-gen consoles really early, and its hard to say if the current gen consoles have actually reached their full potential. If they have then the only games I could think of that shows this are Skyward Sword, Modern Warfare 3, and Final Fantasy XIII. ?There?s still plenty of games slated for a release on these current gen systems that look like they could push the limits each consoles limits, and I?m still waiting for my Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and Kingdom Hearts 3.

Lukky: I see where your point is headed but I gotta disagree with you on this one. This generation of systems have lasted a lot longer than systems usually last. There is usually a 5 to 6 year gap between systems and this next generation will match that or be longer. Xbox 360 is going on its 7th year, PlayStation 3 is going on its 6th year and the Nintendo Wii is also going on its 6th year. I also think that hardware releases like Move and Kinect has helped extend the lifespan of this generation?s home consoles. These current systems are very close to maxing out the capabilities of current TVs so I think that the gap between systems may become even longer as time progresses.

Kazesama777: Indeed systems do have a pattern of being out for about 6 years until a newer console is released. The PS2 came out in 2000 and the PS3 launched 6 years after that. Following the same pattern it would be about time for a newer system. Even so I feel as if the current gen consoles still have a lot to offer. However, with all the problems and rumors that arose with the current gen I guess it would seem that they really didn?t have time to shine. I just hope that the next gens don?t suffer the same issues that the current gens have.

Lukky: I think these system have a lot to offer but there isn?t anything left that?s gonna blow our minds. The best example of this was the release of Battlefield 3. The game looked amazing in trailers and if you had a strong enough computer it looked stunning on PC. The console versions of the game just could not measure up to the visuals that the PC offered. Consoles are usually weaker than the top end PCs that are available and that?s not necessarily a bad thing, but fans have to keep that in mind when trying to formulate realistic expectations of these consoles. If a system can?t find a way to shine in 6 to 7 years then it?s time to move on.
