How To Boost Morale In A Virtual Workplace - Business Insider

SAP

This post is part of the "Future of Business" series, which examines how cutting-edge technologies are rapidly reshaping our world, from how businesses run to how we live. "The Future of Business" is sponsored by SAP.

One of the most dominant trends in the workplace is the rise of the virtual team. Whether by design or necessity, more and more people are working outside the office but on the same sorts of multi-person long term projects with the same demands for teamwork as always.

For insight, we spoke to Katherine Graham-Leviss, the founder of XBInsights, a data-based talent assessment and coaching company which itself has a network of coaches that work virtually.?

By far the most important thing is that managers know the members of their virtual teams, and put the time in to know how they like to communicate in that environment. They can use that information to motivate them and avoid the behavioral pitfalls that occur in a virtual environment.?

Below is a lightly edited transcript of our conversation:

How can employers motivate employees when they have less face time?

There are a couple of consistencies that I see in this, and one, it's really about communications skills. Oftentimes people don't have good communication skills and its a real issue, and the other thing that I see, it's tough virtually for executives that we deal with to keep their finger on the pulse of what people are doing without constantly calling people. I think that communication piece is really critical.

The kind of work that I do and where I really get involved is in that communication piece and really helping leaders understand each of their direct reports' real communications preferences and needs, because once they understand those things, they can be much more effective in reading, guiding, directing, and motivating each individual. I think it's really up to the leader or the manager to really understand those communication preferences of each individual and put those into action.

Are there certain communications issues that execs have that are amplified in a virtual setting??

I think that there are a couple of things that happen. So for example, a lot of times, there's email communication in a virtual environment. Email communications get misread. Things aren't conveyed in the proper way because you can't see the body language of people and the visual cues, and so a lot of times information will be miscommunicated. Especially, and this is probably more obvious, in situations where there may be conflict.

Are there particular steps that can be taken to avoid Miscommunication?

Some people prefer ? and are comfortable with ? email communication. Others need verbal communication and interaction. And others need a combination of both of those things, and so the work that I do is really around understanding the communication preferences of each individual and what works best for each individual, because we've found that a one-size-fits-all approach does not work.?

So the best thing to motivate and boost morale is being aware of individual preferences?

That's right. You have to a have a communication strategy that really caters to each individual in order to be truly effective.

Is there a particular communications strategy that's best for motivating virtual teams?

I will tell you that if you have any visual communication technology, it's really much more effective. In the absence of more high tech options, a lot of our teams are using Skype and any technology like that where they can get some of that visual communication and interaction. ...[O]ur team does of a lot of forward work, so we tend to be good listeners, good phone communicators, but not everybody is. As a matter of fact, most people aren't. And so, any time you can take advantage of that type of technology, you should, more and more. My team is asked to do global coaching and we use that technology in the absence of any high tech stuff.

Are there additional issues with high maintenance team members with less face time?

My definition of a high maintenance employee would also be somebody who's a high performer. In that case what happens is you have to really clearly communicate the expectations and be on the same page with them. What they tend to do is anything to get the results. They'll break the rules, they'll plow over other people. They're so driven that they tend not to think about how other people might be thinking or receiving the way in which they communicate, and that's why I think that it's so important ? for that person in particular ? that there's consistent and open communication with very clear feedback and expectations. The issue with those kinds of people is that they don't want to be evaluated on the process, they want to be evaluated on the fact that they got the result, so they like autonomy, but there's got to be some clear communication and guidelines so they don't create a mess.

Once leaders understand that they have to set those guidelines and those boundaries then even managing high maintenance, high performance employees becomes easier.

How can you find the best people for a virtual team and keep them motivated?

I think that not everybody's built to work virtually. A lot of our coaches who have been with me 9 and 10 years work out of their homes. And there are some who need to go to an office every day, so we've set up offices even though as a team we work virtually, because they need to go to that office; it's too difficult for them to work in their home setting. A lot of times we're looking at scientific assessment data because we're using our profile system to hire people.?The data can point to, not will somebody work well in a virtual team, but can they work well independently, and what is it that they really need. Some people really need that people interaction, some people need that structure. If they're in a virtual environment and we know those things, we can better set them up for success.?

So find the data, know your people, and build some structure for them?

That's right. And find some consistency in how you interact with them.

How do you plan with having to work unexpectedly as a virtual team?

I see this one all the time. I have a client ? we were just talking about this ? that there are certain people who are very good at multitasking and they can work [on] the road, but what ends up happening when you have a team doing that and they're out of the office a lot is that everybody has their own individual agendas, and there's a lack of communication and all of the consistent team types of communication fall to the wayside because everybody's traveling. It really becomes a big issue. And with a lack of a plan and a strategy and check ins and checkpoints and virtual staff communications that [are] mandatory, it really becomes a problem, so there's got to be a communication plan for how people are expected to interact and show up and communicate when everybody's on the road.

So when it comes to keeping a virtual team motivated, structure can be even more important?

Yes.?

10 Amazing Health Benefits of Drinking Tea | Life'd

Cup of green tea

Ah, tea. What?s not to like about it?

It?s delicious, it warms you up, and it?s one of the best things you could ever put into your body. Tea is chock full of natural substances that will improve your health in a lot of different ways. Although we?ve known for centuries that tea is associated with many health benefits, we?ve only just started to investigate it scientifically. The findings so far have been amazing.

Even if you hate tea, you should drink it every day because?

1. Tea strengthens your immune system.

A 2009 experiment by the National Academy of Sciences showed that tea drinkers? immune system blood cells responded to germs five times faster than those of coffee drinkers. Green, white, and black teas are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that naturally kill bacteria and viruses and protect the body against a wide range of diseases.

2. Tea protects you against cancer.

Because tea is loaded with antioxidants, it?s very efficient in preventing free radical damage that may lead to cancer. Not only that, but green tea also contains a natural polyphenol called ECGC, which has been shown to halt cancer growth and to protect cells from DNA damage. Scottish researchers also discovered that green tea shrinks tumors and in some cases removes them altogether.

3. Tea rehydrates your body.

Forget Gatorade. It?s chock full of sugar and artificial flavors that actually retain water in the body. Instead, have some tea. It does the trick. Contrary to popular belief, the caffeine content in tea is not high enough to dehydrate the body. Instead, tea hydrates the body as much as water does, only with added antioxidant benefits! A study conducted by Kings College in the UK (in addition to numerous other studies) found that normal hydration was consistent with high tea consumption. Next time you go running, ditch the Gatorade and bring along a bottle of iced tea!

4. Tea lowers your blood pressure.

Studies have shown that drinking black or green tea on a regular basis lowers your blood pressure levels by about 2 to 3 points. That?s a big deal, because even a small decrease like this can drastically reduce your risk of high blood pressure, stroke, or heart disease.

5. Tea can lift your spirits.

Some types of tea can serve as natural antidepressants. Kratom tea is a good example. At low doses, kratom gives you a burst of physical energy and makes you more alert. People have reported feeling friendlier, sociable, and more talkative after drinking kratom tea and other types of tea.

6. Tea helps keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Not only does tea contain fluoride, it also kills the bacteria that causes plaque, tooth decay, and bad breath. However, some low-quality teas have been shown to contain a lot of fluoride that can do more harm than good. You should consider drinking only high-quality teas, as they contain the safest levels of fluoride.

7. Tea increases your metabolism.

Tea, especially green tea, has natural properties that boost your metabolism and help your body burn fat faster. Whenever you drink tea, your metabolism raises as much as 4.5 percent for as long as 8 hours afterwards. It?s been shown that drinking three cups of green tea a day can help you lose 3 pounds per year.

8. Tea helps produce stronger bones.

If you don?t like milk (or if you?re a vegan), you?re in luck! Researchers have discovered that people who drink tea regularly have greater bone density and strength than those who don?t drink tea. In 2009, a Hong Kong study concluded that tea contains a group of chemicals that stimulate bone formation and help slow bone breakdown. They also found that one chemical in particular, called epigallocatechin (EGC), boosts the activity of bone growth by up to 79 percent by promoting bone mineralization in the cells. It also blocks the activity of osteoclast, a type of cell that breaks down bones.

9. Tea lowers your risk of heart disease.

Drinking three or more cups of tea per day lowers your risk of coronary heart disease. It?s no surprise, because tea is packed with antioxidants. Researchers at the University of Maryland Medical Center discovered that the antioxidant properties of green tea might help prevent coronary artery disease.

10. Tea reverses signs of aging.

Toss the chemical-filled anti-aging cream and brew a cup of tea for yourself. It?s better for your skin. The EGCG found in all kinds of tea (except black) reactivates dying skin cells and keeps the skin looking fresh and healthy. Not only does EGCG help prevent wrinkles, it also benefits many skin diseases, including ulcers, wounds, psoriasis, and eczema. In so many different ways, tea keeps the body in tip-top shape and helps prevent it from aging badly.

As great as those health benefits are, they?re not the only ones. Tea comes with so many more health benefits, including:

  • Weight loss
  • Diabetes prevention
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Increased mental alertness
  • Decreased stress

Wait, do you hear that? It sounds like the collective whistling of tea kettles everywhere. Where?s yours?

George Zimmerman now selling his autograph to help with living ...

So perhaps yesterday you were all ?Whatever, Robyn. My mom already has a jar of Glenn Beck?s urine. She keeps it on the same shelf as her Precious Moments figurines, right below her Thomas Kinkade and Anne Geddes prints.? That is fine. Today I offer you a new choice in horrible things you or a loved one could possibly own if either of you happened to be the worst ever? the autograph of George Zimmerman! You know, the guy who ?stood his ground? and refused to be intimidated by a young, skittle-eating whippersnapper, and thus shot him for no apparent reason! I imagine you could display it in your Murderabilia Room, right next to John Wayne Gacy?s clown paintings and that Unabomber hoodie you bought on an internet auction last year.

It?s true. Zimmerman?s Defense Fund is basically selling the dude?s autograph for ?donations?- in the form of personally signed thank you card- with the money to go to his ?living expenses and legal costs?. Which is just pretty icky in a ?don?t any Son of Sam laws kind of forbid this?? kind of way. See?

?The New George Zimmerman Defense Fund, at George?s request, will begin sending Thank You Cards to people who have contributed to the Defense Fund. Each card will be personaly [sic] signed by George. The identity of all donors will continue to be kept strictly confidential, and the envelope of the Thank You Cards will not have any reference to Mr. Zimmerman or the O?Mara Law Group.?

Apparently even Zimmerman, who is awaiting a second degree murder trial for the shooting of teenager Trayvon Martin, must be aware that he is not anyone someone would want to be publicly associated with.

Also, in case you were thinking about it, it probably won?t be ?worth a lot later?. I tried to search on Ebay for something similar, and all I got was that both a letter from Vincent Bugliosi (Charles Manson?s attorney) and an autographed poster of Angela Lansbury during her ?Murder She Wrote? days?both were worth about $180 each. Meh.

Huell Howser quietly retires from public TV's 'California's Gold'

He was so good at talking to people on TV that "The Simpsons" gently mocked his folksy, aw-shucks demeanor. But now it looks as if Huell Howser intends to fade away without comment.

Howser, the white-maned public TV host with the Southern accent who's famed for blurting out "That's amazing!" during interviews, has retired from making original episodes of his program "California's Gold," which travels around the state tracking down interesting people and places. The shows air on numerous statewide public TV stations, including KCET-TV Channel 28.

Speculation that the 67-year-old Howser is seriously ill has been circulating among local TV industry veterans in recent weeks, and insiders reported that he has not been seen for months at his Los Angeles office. On Tuesday the Sacramento Bee reported that Howser was retiring but added that he doesn't wish to make an official announcement.

PHOTOS: The awe of Huell Howser

"Huell is retiring from filming new shows or making appearances (or interviews) but the show will continue to air in reruns for awhile," Ryan Morris, Howser's assistant, wrote in an email to The Times. "We have been gradually winding down all year but Huell has decided to stop, come December 31st."

As for the talk about Howser's ill health, Morris added: "I have heard the rumors and while Huell does not always tell me everything, he seems to be doing fine. He is just trying to get away from television and enjoy some free time."

Howser arrived at his unique local celebrity through fate and his own industriousness. A Tennessee native, he worked as a features reporter for the station now known as KCBS-Channel 2. During the 1980s he switched to making documentaries and interview programs about California, punctuated by his homespun enthusiasms ("Oh my gosh!" is one frequently heard interjection).

He kept the costs low, producing the programs himself with a small staff. He has no agent or publicist and likes to keep the production techniques primitive to avoid rattling his subjects: "If you have a sound guy with a big boom mike it's intimidating as hell," he told The Times in 2009.

But the past few years have proven difficult for Howser. KCET left PBS after a bitter dispute with the network, and Howser, who preferred to keep good relations with everyone, was trapped in the middle, privately unhappy with KCET's move but determined to remain supportive of the station he'd called his home base for years.

A KCET spokeswoman did not answer an email seeking comment Tuesday.

Nevertheless, the sizable legion of Howser fans ensures a legacy that will remain for years.

"No one said 'Wow!' like Huell Howser ? everything about California turned him into a kid on Christmas morning," said Martin Kaplan, the Norman Lear chair in Entertainment, Media and Society at USC. "He was about as far from irony as you can get. He made corny cool."

"Simpsons" co-creator Matt Groening is a longtime fan, so much so that in 2005 the animated series mocked him with a character thinly veiled as Howell Huser.

"Everyone at 'The Simpsons' does a Huell Howser impression," Groening told The Times in 2009. "We all love him. I have on my permanent do-not-delete TiVo Huell's visit to the Bunny Museum."

Wall Street gains on hopes for "fiscal cliff" deal

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks turned higher on Wednesday on investors' hopes that a compromise could be reached to avoid the "fiscal cliff" after comments from U.S. House Speaker John Boehner and President Barack Obama.

Shares of Costco Wholesale Corp jumped 5.5 percent to $101.81 after the retailer became the latest company to announce a special dividend in case taxes jump next year.

The market sharply pared losses in volatile late morning trading after Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, said he was optimistic that a deal on the "fiscal cliff" to avert large tax hikes and spending cuts could be reached. That helped reverse a slide of 1 percent.

Adding to the more positive tone, the president, speaking later in the day, said he hoped to get a deal done before Christmas.

For weeks now, the market has been swinging back and forth on headlines from Washington. Wednesday's gyrations served to once again highlight the extent that the impasse is affecting the market and the likelihood of more volatility to come.

"There's only one issue in front of the financial markets, and it's the debate on the fiscal cliff," said Jack De Gan, chief investment officer of Harbor Advisory Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

"That's the only issue out there, and I think in the short term, there's not much that we can do other than watch, and try to anticipate what's going to happen."

One possible result of the deficit-reduction talks is a rise in the tax rate on dividends, prompting some companies to issue special dividends or move up plans for dividends.

The latest example is retailer Costco, which said it will pay a special dividend of roughly $3 billion to investors - the largest payout so far from any company ahead of a likely increase in the dividend tax. Costco also posted monthly same-store sales that beat forecasts. [ID:nL5E8MS8MP] Costco's stock hit an intraday high of $102.14, close to its 2012 high of $104.43 set on October 10.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> gained 79.75 points, or 0.62 percent, to 12,957.88. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> rose 5.87 points, or 0.42 percent, to 1,404.81. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> added 9.04 points, or 0.30 percent, to 2,976.83.

Knight Capital Group Inc shares jumped 14.1 percent to $3.39 on news that Getco LLC has sent a proposal for a merger between Getco and Knight Capital at a price of $3.39 per share, according to a regulatory filing.

Obama is meeting on Wednesday at the White House with chief executives from top corporations, including Goldman Sachs , Deloitte LLP and Caterpillar Inc , to discuss U.S. fiscal problems.

"While there's little that the president and vice president could do at today's meeting to improve moods in America's corner office, we still believe a legislative compromise will be reached before 'fiscal cliff' detonates," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer of BMO Private Bank, in Chicago.

"In the meantime, we expect daunting headlines and emotional market volatility."

On the earnings front, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc forecast quarterly and full-year earnings well ahead of analysts' expectations, helped by an expanded lineup of single-serve coffee makers and drinks. The company's stock surged 24 percent to $35.91.

The S&P 500's drop of 1 percent in the morning was partly caused by data that showed U.S. single-family home sales fell in October, casting a shadow over what has been one of the brighter spots in the U.S. economy.

Housing stocks fell after the data. The PHLX housing index <.hgx> slipped 0.5 percent. D.R. Horton Inc , the biggest U.S. home builder, fell 1.2 percent to $19.34.

Ole Miss Quarterback Bo Wallace Wins 2012 Conerly Trophy as Top College Football Player in Mississippi

Rebels Star Wins Coveted Award As Magnolia State?s Best College Football Player Over Four Other Finalists in Voting By Panel of Sports News Media Representatives

JACKSON, Miss.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace, fresh off of leading his Rebels team to its first Egg Bowl victory in four years over in-state arch rival Mississippi State, won the C Spire Conerly Trophy on Tuesday night as the Magnolia state?s top college football player in 2012.

?We?re very pleased with the caliber of players selected as nominees and finalists for the Conerly Trophy?

Wallace, who led the Rebels to a 6-6 record this year and its first bowl berth since 2009, passed for 2,843 yards with 19 touchdowns, ran for another 363 yards and eight touchdowns and scored a touchdown on a 25-yard pass reception while logging a cumulative 144.20 quarterback rating this year, one of the best in the SEC and among the top 40 in the nation.

Wallace received the trophy during a special awards program Tuesday night in Jackson at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum from master of ceremonies Rick Cleveland, MSHOF executive director, and Jim Richmond, vice president of Corporate Communications for C Spire Wireless, title sponsor of the award since 1998.

He edged out four other finalists ? Mississippi State defensive back Johnthan Banks, Southern Miss defensive lineman Jamie Collins, Jackson State wide receiver Rico Richardson and Delta State offensive tackle Kendall Hunter. A panel of 50 print, television and radio news media members across the state selected the finalists and the winner from among 10 nominees from each of Mississippi?s football-playing four year colleges.

Wallace, a sophomore from Pulaski, Tennessee, joins four other Ole Miss Rebels as former winners of the coveted award ? quarterbacks Stewart Patridge (1997) and Eli Manning (2001 and 2003), running back Deuce McAllister (1999) and linebacker Patrick Willis (2006).

Wallace started every game for the Ole Miss Rebels this year and his 3,206 total offensive yards make him only the second player in school history to eclipse 3,000 yards in a season behind Eli Manning, who reached that total twice during his Ole Miss career. He praised Rebels head coach Hugh Freeze, the coaching staff and his teammates for helping him lead the school back to respectability in the SEC.

?Coach Freeze and our coaching staff spent a lot of time and effort getting everyone on our team to buy in to their long-term vision and plan for our program this year,? Wallace said. ?It paid off as we have one of the most exciting teams in college football with tremendous momentum to build on this year?s success on into the future.?

?We?re very pleased with the caliber of players selected as nominees and finalists for the Conerly Trophy,? Richmond said. ?This has been a very strong year in terms of individual and overall performance and leadership among all of the schools who submitted nominees for the award. Our winner is not only a great football player, but an outstanding young man with good character, a strong record of community involvement and a terrific work ethic.?

Now in its 17th year, the Conerly Trophy presented by C Spire Wireless is named after the late Charlie Conerly ? the only football inductee in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame who was an All-American at a Mississippi university, an NFL rookie of the year and NFL All-Pro member and quarterbacked a team to a world championship.

Barnstable avenges last year's playoff loss to Lincoln-Sudbury football

When the Lincoln-Sudbury and Barnstable football teams met in the playoffs last season, the Red Raiders found themselves up 13 points at the half before the Warriors fought back to win.

The two squads met last night in a Division 1A semifinal rematch and once again, Barnstable found itself up two touchdowns at the break. This time around, however, there would be no such comeback for L-S, as the Red Raiders run game and defense controlled the play in Barnstable's 28-7 victory at Taunton High.

The undefeated Red Raiders (11-0) will meet the winner of Everett and Masconomet in the Super Bowl on Saturday at Gillette Stadium at 1:30 p.m.

"We got outplayed tonight," Warriors coach Tom Lopez said after his squad finished 10-2. "They ran the ball very well and their defense really stuck it to us. I was disappointed with the way we played on offense. We couldn't get any consistency. Very poor effort on our part offensively, I thought, but you've got to give them credit."

Heading in to this one, the matchup to watch was Barnstable's high-powered offense against L-S's stout defense, which was allowing less than 10 points per game.

But while the Red Raiders offense was still able to be effective, it was their defense that was the real story. Early on, Barnstable's front seven was all over the Warriors rushing attack, which was L-S's bread-and-butter all season.?

Once the Red Raiders took an early lead, it was clear that the Warriors were out of their comfort zone by trying to pass more. The result was L-S tallying just 87 yards of total offense, which included only 16 in the first half.

"They were hitting hard tonight, they played with emotion, and they were big," Warriors senior quarterback/defensive back Henry Guild said. "That's all that they need to win. It hurt being down early. We thought the rain was going to (negatively) impact them more, but it didn't. We just didn't execute on offense the way we had to. They took it home and congratulations to them."

With one of the state's top quarterbacks in Nick Peabody and two dangerous wide receivers in Dylan Morris and Tedaro France, the Red Raiders are known for their vaunted passing attack. But last night, they leaned heavily on the feet of Hayden Murphy, who simply could not be stopped.

Running behind a line of Owen Murray, Tom Harrington, Tom Grimmer, Allen Buckley, and Chris Kennedy, the junior torched the Warriors defense, carrying 31 times for 182 yards and three scores.

"Our offensive line doesn't really get the glory, but what they did for us tonight allowed us to run the ball the way we did," Barnstable coach Chris Whidden said. "Hayden played a great game for us and I keep giving our offensive line credit, but he got a lot of yards after contact. A little snow doesn't really affect our passing game, but this was more about the look that they gave us. That's what we do all year and I've got faith in my kids that we'll be able to make plays."

The Red Raiders took a 2-0 lead with 3:25 left in the first quarter when the snap went over the head of L-S punter Chris Giorgio and out of the back of the end zone for a safety.

On Barnstable's ensuing possession, Murphy found paydirt from 15 yards out, but a failed two-point run left the score 8-0.

In the second quarter, Barnstable was moving the ball when on 4th-and-8, the Warriors jumped offside. The Red Raiders converted the 4th-and-3 via Peabody and four plays later, Murphy scored from 13 yards out.

"We had way too many mistakes tonight," Lopez said.

Peabody and Murphy each scored third quarter touchdowns from a yard out before Giorgio got his team on the board with a 1-yard plunge of his own in the fourth quarter, but by then, it was too little too late.

BT lets site visitors add features to landlines with only a phone number and postcode

BT site

If you're subscribed to BT's landline phone service, you may want to keep an eye on your bill in the near future. The British provider recently patched up a website issue that showed account holders' full names, but attention is being drawn to an approach that lets visitors add paid features like TV service using only an account's phone number and postcode as credentials. When both of these are potentially in the public eye, that creates understandable concerns that a rogue agent could hike someone's rates without consent -- even the email address BT uses to confirm changes is only chosen on the spot, which could keep the change a secret early on. BT so far contends that the light security is for "customer convenience," although we've reached out to verify whether or not that will continue to be the company's policy going forward. In the meantime, those still on the carrier's traditional phone service will want to be careful about giving out their number to strangers; while the risk isn't extreme in practice, there's no need to hand someone the keys to the kingdom.

Former Egyptian foreign minister Amr Moussa leads one of many anti-Morsi protest marches heading to Tahrir square Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012. At least a hundred thousand Egyptians have been protesting today in a central square in Cairo, challenging the decision by Egypt's president to grant himself sweeping new powers. The protesters, waving Egyptian flags and chanting slogans against President Mohammed Morsi, joined hundreds of others who had been camping out in the square since Friday, demanding that the decrees be revoked. (AP Photo/Mohammed Abu Zeid)

(AP) ? The same chants used against Hosni Mubarak were turned against his successor Tuesday as more than 200,000 people packed Egypt's Tahrir Square in the biggest challenge yet to Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

The massive, flag-waving throng protesting Morsi's assertion of near-absolute powers rivaled some of the largest crowds that helped drive Mubarak from office last year.

"The people want to bring down the regime!" and "erhal, erhal" ? Arabic for "leave, leave" ? rang out across the plaza, this time directed at Egypt's first freely elected president.

The protests were sparked by edicts Morsi issued last week that effectively neutralize the judiciary, the last branch of government he does not control. But they turned into a broader outpouring of anger against Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood, which opponents say have used election victories to monopolize power, squeeze out rivals and dictate a new, Islamist constitution, while doing little to solve Egypt's mounting economic and security woes.

Clashes broke out in several cities, with Morsi's opponents attacking Brotherhood offices, setting fire to at least one. Protesters and Brotherhood members pelted each other with stones and firebombs in the Nile Delta city of Mahalla el-Kobra, leaving at least 100 people injured.

"Power has exposed the Brotherhood. We discovered their true face," said Laila Salah, a housewife at the Tahrir protest who said she voted for Morsi in last summer's presidential election. After Mubarak, she said, Egyptians would no longer accept being ruled by an autocrat.

"It's like a wife whose husband was beating her and then she divorces him and becomes free," she said. "If she remarries she'll never accept another day of abuse."

Gehad el-Haddad, a senior adviser to the Brotherhood and its political party, said Morsi would not back down on his edicts. "We are not rescinding the declaration," he told The Associated Press.

That sets the stage for a drawn-out battle that could throw the nation into greater turmoil. Protest organizers have called for another mass rally Friday. If the Brotherhood responds with demonstrations of its own, as some of its leaders have hinted, it would raise the prospect of greater violence after a series of clashes between the two camps in recent days.

A tweet by the Brotherhood warned that if the opposition was able to bring out 200,000 to 300,000, "they should brace for millions in support" of Morsi.

Another flashpoint could come Sunday, when the constitutional court is to rule on whether to dissolve the assembly writing the new constitution, which is dominated by the Brotherhood and its Islamist allies. Morsi's edicts ban the courts from disbanding the panel; if the court defies him and rules anyway, it would be a direct challenge that could spill over into the streets.

"Then we are in the face of the challenge between the supreme court and the presidency," said Nasser Amin, head of the Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession. "We are about to enter a serious conflict" on both the legal and street level, he said.

Morsi and his supporters say the decrees were necessary to prevent the judiciary from blocking the "revolution's goals" of a transition to democracy. The courts ? where many Mubarak-era judges still hold powerful posts ? have already disbanded the first post-Mubarak elected parliament, which was led by the Brotherhood. Now it could also take aim at the Islamist-led upper house of parliament.

Morsi's decrees ban the judiciary from doing so and grant his decisions immunity from judicial review. Morsi also gave himself sweeping powers to prevent threats to the revolution, stability or state institutions, which critics say are tantamount to emergency laws. These powers are to remain in effect until the constitution is approved and parliamentary elections are held, not likely before spring 2013.

Opponents say the decrees turn Morsi ? who narrowly won last summer's election with just over 50 percent of the vote ? into a new dictator, given that he holds not only executive but also legislative powers, after the lower house of parliament was dissolved.

Tuesday's turnout was an unprecedented show of strength by the mainly liberal and secular opposition, which has been divided and uncertain amid the rise to power of the Brotherhood over the past year. The crowds were of all stripes, including many first-time protesters.

"Suddenly Morsi is issuing laws and becoming the absolute ruler, holding all powers in his hands," said Mona Sadek, a 31-year-old engineering graduate who wears the Islamic veil, a hallmark of piety. "Our revolt against the decrees became a protest against the Brotherhood as well."

"The Brotherhood hijacked the revolution," agreed Raafat Magdi, an engineer who was among a crowd of some 10,000 marching from the Cairo district of Shubra to Tahrir to the beat of drums and chants against the Brotherhood. Reform leader Mohammed ElBaradei led the march.

"People woke up to (Morsi's) mistakes, and in any new elections they will get no votes," Magdi said.

Many in the crowd said they were determined to push ahead with the protests until Morsi retreats. A major concern was that Islamists would use the decree's protection of the constitutional assembly to drive through their vision for the next charter, with a heavy emphasis on implementing Shariah, or Islamic law. The assembly has been plagued with controversy, and more than two dozen of its 100 members have quit in recent days to protest Islamist control.

"Next Friday will be decisive," protester Islam Bayoumi said of the upcoming rally. "If people maintain the same pressure and come in large numbers, they could manage to press the president and rescue the constitution."

A fellow protester, Saad Salem Nada, said of Morsi: "I am a Muslim and he made me hate Muslims because of the dictatorship in the name of religion. In the past, we had one Mubarak. Now we have hundreds."

Even as the crowds swelled in Tahrir, clashes erupted nearby between several hundred protesters throwing stones and police firing tear gas on a street leading to the U.S. Embassy. Clouds of tear gas hung over the area, where clashes have broken out for several days, fueled by anger over police abuses.

A photographer working for the AP, Ahmed Gomaa, was beaten by stick-wielding police while covering the clashes. Police took his equipment and Gomaa was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Rival rallies by Morsi opponents and supporters turned into brief clashes in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, where anti-Morsi protesters broke into the local office of the Muslim Brotherhood, throwing furniture out the windows and trying unsuccessfully to set fire to it. Protesters also set fire to Brotherhood offices in the city of Mansoura.

Morsi's supporters canceled a massive rally planned for Tuesday in Cairo, citing the need to "defuse tension." Morsi's supporters say more than a dozen of their offices have been ransacked or set ablaze since Friday. Some 5,000 demonstrated in the southern city of Assiut in support of Morsi's decrees, according to witnesses there.

So far, there has been little sign of a compromise. On Monday, Morsi met with the nation's top judges and tried to win their acceptance of his decrees. But the move was dismissed by many in the opposition and the judiciary as providing no real concessions.

Saad Emara, a senior Muslim Brotherhood member, said Morsi will not make any concessions, especially after the surge of violence and assaults on Brotherhood offices.

Emara accused the opposition "of resorting to violence with a political cover," claiming that former ruling party and Mubarak-era businessmen were hiring thugs to attack Brotherhood offices with the opposition's blessing.

"The story now is that the civilian forces are playing with fire. This is a dangerous scene."

Fusion is so important in my life. Every Sunday night I look at my week and decide how my schedule will fit around my Fusion workouts. I would rather be at Fusion than teaching my own cycle class. There has never been a workout or place that I want to go and enjoy more than Fusion. I see it as part of my mental health. On a day that I can't make class, I am flat out mad and grumpy the rest of the day. My children have a much happier Mother, and my marriage to Tim is stronger. Thank you to each of you instructors for always pushing me. Every class I am striving to do the best I can. Each of you inspire me to be the best. Like you always say... Go Big, or Go Home! Love it and I love Fusion!!! --MARI PLATT

I have something new to be thankful for this Thanksgiving?Fusion Fitness! I discovered Fusion through the Weight Loss Bootcamp last February and have become hooked! Shawna Wright was such an incredible motivator and leader during the 12 weeks of bootcamp and its still wonderful to see her periodically in classes or when she invites WLBC alums back for a workout with the current session. I am thankful to her for supporting and pushing me as I got a jumpstart on getting my health back on track. Now, I am thankful for ALL of the Fusion classes and instructors?especially Sadie and her insanely hard Fusion Mix classes, Darby and her high energy Bikini Bootcamp class, Amy Person and her lean and mean Barre Intensity class and Jacqui and her calorie scorching Circuit Circus class! I have never had a workout or class push and challenge me like Fusion and for that I am thankful. I am also thankful for being able to share my new love of Fusion with family and friends, old and new alike! Happy Thanksgiving!???? --REBECCA ARBUCKLE

I hate cardio (gasp! I know) and I would rather spend all day in a weight room than even think about running. But, I know that I need cardio to keep myself healthy and burn some calories. I tried class after class at my big box gym and it was BORING, plus I needed to spend another hour afterwards working out to make up for all that those other gym classes lack. And that's where Fusion comes in. I love all of the instructors but take most classes with Darby and Sadie. They push me harder than I could ever push myself and challenge my body differently every single class. Fusion is the one form of cardio that I truly do love and look forward to every week. Fusion rocks in every way from the amazing instructors to the killer music, wonderful staff and all of the friendly smiling faces that help me make it through that brutal but awesome hour. Thank you Fusion!!!! --COLLEEN UZELAC

I started Fusion on January 29 of this year when I started Weight Loss Boot Camp. I was completely intimated by everything about Fusion - the workout, the awesome bodies, even the clothes. Ten months and 60 pounds later I can say I have found the Fusion community to be so encouraging and supportive. I am so thankful for WLBC and Amp Camp and for Shawna, our trainer and motivator extraordinaire. I appreciate the killer workouts and inspiring words from ALL of the amazing instructors, but especially those who somehow manage to get us going so hard in the classes I frequent at 5:30 am - that's you Darby, Sadie, and Jacqui! Mostly though I am thankful to have found Fusion women who make it such a positive environment. The bond of getting through tough classes together provides inspiration and motivation on my journey to a happier, healthier me!

At the risk of sounding too sappy, Fusion has been my much needed kick in the butt, the hardest thing I've ever done, somewhat of an obsession, and one of my favorite things to do on the planet. What I love the most about Fusion is 100 percent of the time, every instructor helps you to feel welcomed and inspired from the minute you walk into the door up until the time you leave a sweaty, exhilarated mess. The energy and challenge (and music!) of the classes motivate me to do my best -- even if I can only sorta figure out what I'm doing. THANK YOU to the fabulous and amazing Fusion instructors for helping me stay fit, healthy and sane...you truly are the absolute best!

WOW...I am so glad I overheard some gals talking about Fusion Fitness at my fitness center...old fitness center! I bought 10 passes to see what it was all about and also attended my 'regular' classes at the gym where I would spend 2+ hours working out 4-5 times a week. After my initial 10 classes, I was hooked! I cancelled my gym membership and bought the unlimited monthly pass working out for only 1 hour at a time and getting even better results. Being a college athlete, like many Fusionistas, I?ve found this is the best work out I have done. I love the inspiration from the instructors and how they never let down...and keep pushing and pushing and pushing! Just the moment I'd like to throw my little 2 pound weight at Darby, she flashes that dimple or when I?ve had enough with Sadie she looks right at me and tells 'us' to pull my abs in as I see her washboard stomach through her shirt and know she has twins, TWINS! I mentally feel like I'm 19 again and in college pre-season and then realize I've had four babies and my body doesn't recover quite as quickly. I love being sore. Better yet, I love where I'm sore! I love the music. I love that it's always new to me and my body. I love how the music is so loud you can zone in and try to not think about the burn. I love how strong I feel since I have started- walking up the stairs, carrying my baby, getting out Christmas tubs, it doesn't matter. I don't love my butt and my abs don't look like our beloved instructors and I sure can't hold my leg up even half as high as them. But I also like goals, so there is my goal! Baby steps, after all, I've only been doing it about 2 months! Thank you girls for your constant motivation, great classes, and great bodies! --JESSICA MCCARTY

Fusion is the most incredible work out imaginable.
The Fusion experience as a whole is life changing.
The environment itself is uplifting, full of women all working towards the same goal.
We all come for the incredible work out and the instructors never disappoint. Never ever.
Starting/ending the day with a Fusion class makes me a better human.
A better mother, a better wife, a better employee (sort of), a better friend and etc......
Being so used to the Fusion schedule, the first day of my daughter?s school (PDO mind you) I dropped them off a bit before 9:40, school starts at 9:00..... Not only did I look like a lunatic but I also missed my 9:40 class :).
Fusion is addicting not only because of the insane workouts that work, but because of the superwomen that teach these classes. The instructors keep you motivated, keep you sweating, keep you moving and keep you coming back. They are brilliant. Darby is brilliant.
I kid not when I say they are super human. Seriously.
Sadie kills it every class and without any doubt I walk out of there feeling better and telling myself I will look/feel better due to this.
I am beyond words thankful for Fusion and the instructors. At Thanksgiving dinner when I will say, "I am thankful for Fusion," my husband and kids will not be surprised.

?--BRITTANY DEUPREE

After a year of coming to Fusion nearly every day, I can say with bold certainty that stumbling into a Fusion class was the most productive mistake I?ve ever made. Without sounding like a total cheese ball, Fusion has become something far more than a workout for me. It?s my reset button. It?s community. It?s structure, challenge, discipline, and even friendship. And though I?ve physically become stronger and my fitness has improved (yes, my husband will be the first to testify and especially in regard to my improved bum), I find that my mental/emotional toughness has been the recipient off a massive dose of ass kicking as well. Life can be tough, situations can be challenging, and who would have thought my daily workout regime would help me through life?s daily grind. It certainly has, and I?m thankful for it.
Fusion instructors?every single one of you?the amount of work and energy you put into each class is not only noticeable but it?s wildly respected. There isn?t another group of instructors anywhere with such dedication and talent (and yes? sculpted, rock solid bodies of course). I admire you on all accounts and look forward to being led by you each day. Thank YOU for bringing your energy and genuine selves to class each day and for challenging me to a new level of me. Though I haven?t experienced ALL of the Fusion talent, I see many of you instructors quite regularly. Darby- you are a genius for starting and running this whole thing. I love seeing strong women run businesses well and you do just that. You should be very proud of what you?ve accomplished and feel so blessed to have all these women working on your team. Keep the gansta tunes rolling?this is my favorite Darby trademark. Amy Hodes?I love it when you refer to Fatty McFatterson in class. I laugh at your subtle humor and chalk it up to extra ab work. Erica- I watched you rock out 9 months of carrying a baby and an amazing bounce back which gives me hope for the day when I do the same. Sadie- you never let me get away with knee-pushups and I thank you for it. Francie- your gentle spirit compliments your crazy hard classes. Those one-leg burpees still give me nightmares. Jacqui- I?ll never forget my first circuit circus class- you encouraged me through every minute. Leeze- I just took my first class from you last week and it won?t be my last- such positive energy! Amy Person- you?ve taken on so much in the last year and I?m amazed at the way you deliver a consistent class every time. Brooke- I?ve always loved your smooth transitions in class but let?s be real?staring at your legs alone challenges me. Hope you all don?t get tired of me because chances are you?ll be seeing me just as much this year. Viva la Fusion (and yes, I typed this entire thing while holding plank position and in a 95 degree room?with two pound ankle weights). --JESSICA ROARK

To my fabulous Fusion instructors and friends: Simply put, you ladies are awesome. My few hours spent with you during the week make the rest of my week so much better, both physically and mentally. I truly have FUN sweating with you all, even when my body is being pushed to its max. I never thought I'd say this, but I feel stronger and more empowered AFTER having five kids now that I've discovered Fusion. Your knowledge in targeting all of the little muscles that most workouts overlook has helped me shave a full minute and a half off of my running time, and has helped me set new personal records with my running and endurance racing. I sincerely look forward to walking into the studio with the music blaring, busting out a little dance move, and getting down to business with my favorite instructors. Thank you....words can't do you justice. --ALLYSON CHENEY

The thing I love most about Fusion is that on top of vastly improving my athletic abilities and attitude towards fitness and health, it has been a constant in my life these past couple years that has given me confidence, mental strength, and a place where I come to find solace and feel like myself. Right before I found Fusion I experienced a major event in life that had sort of left me broken for a while. I am so thankful I came to that first class, searching for something I could do for me as I began to build myself up again, inside and out. I seriously credit the environment of inspiration and health, endurance and fun that has kept me coming back all this time with a lot of the strength I?ve gained during this climb. The sense of achievement and pride I feel each day walking out of the Fusion doors has helped me cope some really tough stuff?many mornings I?d make myself come here even though I wanted to lay in bed and feel sorry for myself?and all of those mornings were truly transforming for me. I?ve been a gym gal since college, but never ever have I experienced anything close to the challenging, nearly impossible workouts here. (And I want to give a major shout out to the fact that you are the only trendy/artsy/progressive fitness studio here in KC?a?and b?that has CHILDCARE!!! And my kids really love coming.) I love the loud, funky music and vibe of a hip LA studio using all the new exercises you read about in Shape. I love the way all of the instructors are so focused on pushing each of us to go harder and farther than we would go on our own. When I first started I would literally have to take a nap in the afternoon I was so exhausted, and now I can even get through two classes (barely) when I?m feeling a little crazy. It makes me feel so good to see my defined arm muscles or get in that awesome breathing rhythm when I?m in the cardio zone. Instructors?you are all so full of personality and genuine love of what you do?I wonder sometimes how you?re always changing up the routine and finding new moves and keeping us all entertained day after day after day. I want to say THANK YOU to all of the women that keep Fusion rolling. You ladies know that we all love coming here, but I (we) want you to know how much of an impact you make on so many of us. From the everyday classes to the WLBC?s, you should know that lives, not just bodies, are being changed here in a big way. Thank you. ?Annie Tumlin
