How To Incorporate Article Writing Skills Into Your Website

In other words, you?re doing yourself a huge disservice if you don?t pick up and use some basic marketing and journalistic techniques in your writing. This article will show you just a few starters to get you going.

Punchy headlines

One of the best things about English is that you don?t always need to say everything to get your message across. You can deliberately be vague in your headlines and article titles in order to get your reader asking questions right away. The purpose of the headline is to challenge the reader in some way and compel them to keep reading. When you?re going to make a website, you should think about how you can drop words in your titles to make them more zesty. ?4000 People Protested In Front of the City Hall Today? is not really the best headline that you can use. It should be simplified to ?4000 Protested Today at City Hall? or even just ?4000 Protest at City Hall Today?.

Another type of challenging headline is the one where it is ambiguous. Sometimes this is deliberate, sometimes this is unintentional. Avoid the latter and go for the former. For example, you might want to deliberately be ambiguous to make your reader keep going because they want to find out what you meant by the headline. ?Astronaut Takes Blame for Gas in Spacecraft? is a funny headline and we all know what the author of the article really meant, but we?re already friendly to the article now and will probably at least read the first paragraph.

Good English

When you?re going to make a website, using good English will be the key to a good readership and a long-term blogging career. If you?re not 100% confident in your abilities at writing, then get someone to proofread what you?ve written before it goes online.

There are many hundreds of potential grammar tips that you can employ in your writing and you?d probably do yourself a huge favor by getting your hands on a recent and fun (yes, grammar can be fun!) book that shows you neat little tips and tricks you can use in your writing.

The basic trick to blogging successfully though is to use familiar words and concepts. Words and concepts that are familiar to your readers and to the field your writing about are the key to writing a blog that is memorable.

Write in an active voice, use synonyms and also use an informal or casual tone unless the blog is about a serious topic and calls for formal English. One of the biggest tricks to writing informal and punchy text is to learn how to drop the subject in your writing. We do this when we speak anyway, as it is often very obvious who the subject is. For example, if you?re blogging about your recent trip to go skiing at Mt. Cook in New Zealand, then everyone knows that you?re writing the article about your experience, so there?s absolutely no point to using the word ?I? in your blog post about your trip. ?Went skiing at Mt. Cook this morning.? is far better than ?I went skiing at Mt. Cook this morning.? It?s also familiar and easier to read for most people because that?s the type of language they use when they are texting, Tweeting or instant messaging.

There are many more tricks that you can use with grammar apart from these basic ones when you make a website.

Style and audience

Any article writer will tell you that the style of your article will largely be determined by your audience. An article that uses jargon such as ?tacking?, ?aft?, ?stern? and ?daggerboard? will be unintelligible to more than half of the general population but would not even cause any avid sailors to bat an eyelid. Thus, the key to writing a good article is to know your audience.

If you?re just starting out your blog then of course you have a lot more freedom with this as you?re basically setting out to create your own turf. But this is where observing and reading other blogs on similar topics will also help you.
