On Friday morning?s ?Dan Patrick Show? radio program, Rich Eisen of the NFL Network arrived as a guest to talk about the NFL Scouting Combine.
During the conversation, Patrick asked about fans attending the event, which measures college players with both physical tests and interviews. Eisen said 250 fans were granted access to the event after a process that included writing an essay.
Patrick pressed on the fact that the NFL Network provides hours of coverage of the combine with cameras and analysts but only 250 fans can get into the event. What are the fans, he said, a distraction?
The fact that anyone would actually want to attend the Combine live is a testament to just how fascinated we are with athletic ability. The players are not taking part in competitive tasks against others (although, as Patrick and Eisen discussed, that would certainly make things more interesting; imagine a three-man 40-yard dash).
But to work long enough to write an essay to watch the college players jump, run, throw, catch and bench press means that those people put in time to watch workouts they could see at any local gym.
Even when not performing on a field, though, these are special athletes, and what they do with their abilities remains interesting. It?s difficult to flip right by if you pass it on TV.
Makes you wonder how many would buy tickets, if they could. And if there were no essay.
